Peng Peng: The Chinese cloned sheep with worm genes

A genetically modified sheep has become the world’s first to be cloned using worm DNA.

The male sheep – named “Peng Peng” – was created by Chinese scientists who took genes from a roundworm and inserted them into a donor cell from the ear of a Chinese Merino sheep.

The cell was then inserted into an unfertilised egg and implanted into the womb of a surrogate sheep

Peng Peng was born on 26 March in a laboratory in China's far western region of Xinjiang and weighed 5.74kg at birth.

The worm genes added to Peng Peng’s makeup are linked to the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are more commonly found in nuts, seeds, fish and leafy greens.

In humans, these ‘good’ fats reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and support the normal development of the brain, eye and neurons, according to the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) – the world’s largest genome sequencing centre.

The transgenic sheep embryo was the outcome of what is known as ‘handmade cloning’ – a simplified technique introduced in 2011 which doesn’t require the need for sophisticated equipment used in traditional cloning methods.

The technique has already been used to create pigs, goats and buffalos.

Now one month old, experts say Peng Peng is “growing very well and is very healthy like a normal sheep”.

BGI director Dr Yutao Du said: “The birth of Peng Peng means that people could absorb [unsaturated fats] by drinking milk or eating meat in the future.

“The most difficult task has been accomplished, the transgenic sheep production platform is established, we are ready for the industrial-scale development.”

China, which is home to 22% of the world's population but has only 7% of the world's arable land, has devoted plenty of resources to increasing its domestic food supply.

However, while there are still concerns about food safety, it could take years for meat produced from transgenic animals to appear on the Chinese market.

Woman wins lottery twice in a day – by mistake

An American woman picked up £1.2million ($2million) after a ticket mistake saw her win the lottery twice in the same day.

Virginia Fike, 44, admitted her double win was a result of entering – and winning – the same game twice, rather than two separate ones.

Her jackpot was made all the more fortunate as she had only matched 5 of the 6 numbers, with the Powerball lottery splitting the £49.5million ($80million) jackpot between 14 people with 5 matched numbers.

“I'm in shock,” said Virginia Fike, from Berryville, Virginia. “I was planning on getting the Mega and Powerball tickets but instead I got two Powerballs. I thought if I win I’ll win twice, what are the odds?

“I picked numbers based on my parents' anniversary and their ages at that time, divided by the year they were married. It really just hasn’t sunk in yet,” she added.

Ms Fike picked up the combined cheque for £1.2m ($2m) on Friday, almost two weeks after purchasing the two tickets at an Olde Stone Truck Stop in Virginia.

She said that she plans to take care of her parents and “pay some bills” with her windfall

Dark Chocolate May Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Dark chocolate may lower your risk of heart disease by lowering levels of blood glucose and bad cholesterol while boosting levels of good cholesterol, a small new study suggests.

Chocolate contains compounds called flavanols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Previous research has shown a link between flavanol intake and risk for cardiovascular disease.

In this study, San Diego State University researchers assigned 31 people to consume 50 grams per day of either dark chocolate (70 percent cocoa) or white chocolate (0 percent cocoa). Dark chocolate was used because it has higher flavanol levels than milk chocolate.

The participants' blood pressure, forearm skin blood flow, circulating lipid (fat) profiles and blood glucose levels were recorded before and after they consumed the chocolate for 15 days.

The tests revealed that those who ate dark chocolate had lower levels of blood glucose and "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and higher levels of "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol than those who ate white chocolate.

The study is scheduled to be presented today at the Experimental Biology 2012 meeting in San Diego. Research presented at meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Despite these and other findings that dark chocolate may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, the researchers said chocolate must be eaten in moderation because of its saturated fat and caloric content.

It's estimated that the typical American consumes more than 10 pounds of chocolate a year.

Tour bus features porn star, free breast exams

An industry known for selling sex is doing its part to save women’s breasts – as well as their lives. Porn star Bree Olson, who is also the ex-girlfriend of Charlie Sheen, used her assets to raise awareness for breast cancer by hosting a breast exam bus tour around New York City on Tuesday.

The “Save Our Boobs Bus,” decked out in pink and leather, also featured the Boob Bus Nurse Brigade and free breast cancer screening exams by a board-certified plastic surgeon. The bus was sponsored by Pornhub, an adult entertainment website.

“Porhhub came to me with this idea to do breast cancer awareness,” Olson said. “They figured, you know, breasts are a large part of our industry, and the two would kind of coincide.”

Olson described herself as a “cheerleader” for the event, during which interested volunteers could climb onto the bus and get screened for breast cancer, as well as learn self-exam techniques to use at home.

The event took place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and included five scheduled stops at New York City landmarks such as Grand Central Terminal, Times Square and Central Park.

Dr. David Shafer, a double-board certified plastic surgeon and diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, was on hand to give the exams and teach women how to do self-exams. According to Shafer, not only is there an association between breast implants and plastic surgeons, but plastic surgeons also play an important role with patients after they have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Patients have self-esteem issues and body image issues, and we’re able to step in and say, ‘Listen, we can do the reconstructive procedures,’” Shafer explained. “We can use that skill to help build up the self-esteem of the patient and help them feel better after the surgery. We can also work hand-in-hand with them during their diagnosis.”

Plastic surgeons can even play a role in detecting breast cancer, according to Shafer.

“One thing when we see patients for breast implants, we do a good screening beforehand to make sure they don’t have breast cancer,” Shafer said. “We do mammograms, breast exams, and so that’s why we wanted to get involved with this. With a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime, it’s an important issue for all women.”

Olson said she was affected by breast cancer when the mother of a close friend died from the disease.

“She was in her 30s, and so she didn’t get to see her grandchildren grow up or anything,” Olson said. “And it was very devastating to one of my best friends. To see something like that hit so close to home – you always think it’s not going to happen to you; and it just goes to show that something that seems so far away, and it seems like something you see on TV or hear people talk about can actually happen. It’s very important to get examinations regularly.”

Olson said the bus tour was definitely something she’d like to do again. “Nothing like this had been done before, and I think it’s really great of Pornhub to come together and say, ‘Let’s do this, let’s take this bus to women and raise awareness.’”

Shafer added: “It’s not just focusing on Breast Awareness Month or Day, but it’s an everyday kind of thing so that women know that every month it’s an important thing to do.”

Google Introduces Google Drive With 5GB Free Online Storage

The online file storage and collaboration sphere just got another major player.

Google (GOOG: 601.27, +3.67, +0.61%) on Tuesday announced its long-rumored Google Drive, providing users with five gigabytes of free storage online as well as collaboration tools for items stored in it.

"Today, we’re introducing Google Drive—a place where you can create, share, collaborate, and keep all of your stuff... You can upload and access all of your files, including videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs and beyond," Google wrote in a blog post.

Joining the ranks of Dropbox, Box, and Microsoft's (MSFT: 31.92, -0.20, -0.62%) Sky Drive, and Amazon's (AMZN: 190.33, +2.09, +1.11%) Cloud Drive, Google Drive not only lets users upload their files to be accessed anywhere, but also includes collaboration tools to let others edit documents with built-in Google Docs. Users can even comment on shared items.

Given Google's focus on search, it's not surprising the new product includes a powerful search tool that works by keyword, file type, and other metadata. Setting it apart from the competition, Google Drive includes OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology that recognizes words in scanned documents.

Google Drive can be accessed over the Web, through desktop software for Mac and PC, or through its Android app. Google said it is working on an app for iOS devices like the iPhone. It's also integrated with Google's social network Google+ and soon Gmail users will be able to attach files from it directly to emails.

Users looking for more than just 5GB of space can upgrade to 25GB for $2.49 or 100GB for $4.99 a month. Still not enough? Google's also got a 1TB option for true data hawks that'll set you back $49.99 a month.

4 ways to boost your immune system

Keeping a strong immune system is essential for avoiding common colds during the winter months. Even though the strength of your immune system is partly determined by genetics and childhood exposures, much of it also depends on your nutrition.

Read this article to find out some of the best ways you can keep your immune system strong throughout winter and all year round!

1. Take extra vitamin C

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, has long been known as a nutrient that is especially helpful for the immune system.

Vitamin C can help stimulate the immune system to fight off foreign cells that invade the body. Additionally, some research has shown that vitamin C supplementation can actually increase the number of antibodies, which play a crucial role in protecting your body from bacteria and viruses.

It is recommended that adult men consume at least 90 mg of vitamin C per day, and adult women should get at least 75 mg per day. Mega doses ranging between 250 mg and 1 gram of vitamin C per day are sometimes used to help decrease the incidence and duration of colds.

Citrus fruits and potatoes are both loaded with vitamin C. Also, many fruit juices contain 100% of your daily vitamin C needs.

2. Get enough zinc

Zinc is a micronutrient that is important for proper functioning of the immune system. Research is mixed on whether or not extra zinc supplementation can decrease your chances of getting sick, but health care professionals do know that without good overall zinc status, your immune system will weaken.

Zinc is found in a variety of foods, so most people do not need to worry about getting enough zinc in their diet. However, if you are a strict vegetarian or vegan, you may need extra zinc supplementation. This is because the zinc that is found in plant foods is often not absorbed properly by humans because there are other molecules in the food that block absorption.

It is recommended that adult males consume 11 mg of zinc per day, and adult females should get 8 mg of zinc per day.

3. Take Echinacea when you feel unwell

Doctors do not recommend long-term use of the herb Echinacea, however numerous research studies have shown that when taken right after the first symptoms of a cold appear, it can be effective in reducing the duration and severity of the cold.

Because it is not a nutrient, there are no guidelines on how much Echinacea to take. So, make sure you find a reputable company and follow their guidelines. Usually, taking 1 or 2 pills per day during the first few days of a cold/sickness is recommended.

4. Eat a well-balanced diet

Besides the specific vitamins, minerals and herbs that have been mentioned, make sure that you are consuming a healthy overall diet. Having a balanced diet that contains all of the nutrients your body needs will help ensure that your body, and immune system, is functioning optimally.

Try to incorporate lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy into your diet. These foods will provide you with plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are especially helpful for the immune system.

Remember, when buying any sort of vitamin, mineral or herbal supplements, you must do your research. Since supplements are generally not regulated, you have to make sure that you are buying from a reputable company. Look online for user reviews and other information about the company.
